Sure, the world is full of music, but most people do not realize that we do not have access to all of the music from the past. We can only actually access music produced in the past few centuries, to be honest, so there is a lot that has been long in time.
We don’t know much at all about music at all when you think about it that way. We do not know who the Justin Beiber’s of the tenth century were and have definitely never heard his voice. Music from before the past few centuries is a mystery to us all. People who study music have believed for quite some time now that ancient music was harmonious, but we are gaining insight to this as the days pass.
With archaeological discoveries, we are finally able to grasp just what the ‘hip’ sounds may have been in the far past. Back in the 1950s clay tablets were found that dated back to the 14th century and among them, was very old sheet music that was able to be interpreted musically in 1972. Back then there were no pianos or things of the sort so it is a bit hard to imagine what music must have been like for people of that time.
Below you will find an interpretation of the song mentioned above that was found in among the clay tablets. This version of the hymn is being played on a midi keyboard it is actually quite nice and relaxing. What do you think music was like centuries before us?
This is surely just one of many musical discoveries to come. As technology becomes more advanced and we uncover more things in this world we will be able to better understand our past. For now, this may very well be the oldest song in the world. Was this what you expected ancient music to sound like?
