A video posted on social media shows an Israeli McDonald’s refusing service to customers if they do not have a Green Pass, a health certificate used to identify people who have received a COVID-19 vaccine.
According to Fox Business, McDonald’s Israel stated that the restriction is only in place at locations inside malls. The policy was revealed after the video went viral on social media.
In the viral video, recorded at a McDonald’s in Beit Shemesh, a customer is seen tapping the touch screen kiosk to place an order. However, when the prompt asks for verification of the Green Pass certificate, and the customer chooses the answer “Don’t Have”, the screen automatically resets, cancelling the customer’s order.
A McDonald’s Israel spokesperson released a statement shortly afterward saying that the company is only complying with the government’s emergency laws and regulations.
“The Israeli government has enacted emergency regulations banning the sale of food on a food court without a ‘Green Pass,’ and McDonald’s Israel is complying with the law and has acted accordingly.”
The Green Pass system in Israel is also denying people access to other public venues like bars, gyms, and theaters. However, McDonald’s automated food kiosk could be the first example of a machine having been pre-programmed to halt service to unvaccinated people – or at least for those who haven’t taken up the increasing number of mandated COVID-19 vaccine doses.
